Coined by the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard in the 19th century, *ressentiment* refers to popular backlash against society's wealthy elites -- especially when they appear to be profiteering at the expense of the masses, while at the same time sanctimoniously evangelizing to the rest of society about how best to behave.
Correlated with [[anti-intellectualism]], ressentiment in modern times often takes the form of antipathy towards journalists, academic professors, and the "coastal elite" who are seen as snobbish and out of touch with the proverbial Common Man.
