A subfield of [[machine learning (ML)]], deep learning makes use of [[neural networks]] to allow computers to learn on their own from supplied data, and to make decisions or predictions about the ingested information. A deep learning model could be trained to identify entities in images without being explicitly programmed in how to recognize them, by being fed a diet of sample images. Deep learning has led to a number of step changes in numerous disparate fields, but is a very intense operation that is costly in terms of server resources and computer power.
