Longtermism is a recent philosophical movement making the claim that the most important and pressing problems we face are those that affect the long-term future of humanity. According to this view, the value of our actions should be assessed primarily in terms of their impact on the far future, rather than just the short-term or immediate future. Longtermism grew out of [[Effective Altruism (EA)]], and its adherents overlap considerably including [[Elon Musk]], [[Peter Thiel]], [[Sam Bankman-Fried]], and others. # Against longtermism - [Effective Altruism's most controversial idea](https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/23298870/effective-altruism-longtermism-will-macaskill-future) - [Against longtermism](https://aeon.co/essays/why-longtermism-is-the-worlds-most-dangerous-secular-credo) - [Longtermism: how good intentions and the rich created a dangerous creed](https://www.theguardian.com/technology/commentisfree/2022/dec/04/longtermism-rich-effective-altruism-tech-dangerous) - [The heavy price of longtermism](https://newrepublic.com/article/168047/longtermism-future-humanity-william-macaskill) - [WTF Is 'Longtermism', the Tech Elite Ideology That Led to the FTX Collapse?](https://www.vice.com/en/article/bvmanv/ok-wtf-is-longtermism-the-tech-elite-ideology-that-led-to-the-ftx-collapse) See also: [[Effective Altruism (EA)]], [[Center for Effective Altruism]], [[✳️ Ideologies Home]]
