![[george-conway.png]] **George T. Conway III** (born September 2, 1963) is an American attorney who transformed from [Trump](https://foundations.doctorparadox.net/People/Donald+Trump) supporter to one of the former president's most persistent critics — a stance made all the more complicated by the fact that his wife, Kellyanne Conway, served as one of Trump's most visible defenders. The [couple recently announced an amicable divorce]((https://time.com/6260764/george-kellyanne-conway-divorce-couples-therapists/)) after more than two decades of marriage, following an introduction from [[Ann Coulter]]. Conway was born in Boston and raised in Marlborough, Massachusetts, by Filipino immigrant parents. He followed an elite academic track: Harvard for biochemistry, then Yale Law School, where he edited the _Yale Law Journal_. After clerking for Judge Ralph K. Winter Jr. on the Second Circuit, he joined the powerhouse firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in 1988, making partner by 1994. His legal work included representing Philip Morris in the [Big Tobacco litigation](https://doctorparadox.net/dictionaries/disinformation-dictionary/tobacco-industry-research-committee-tirc/) , arguing successful cases before [[The Supreme Court]] including the securities case _Morrison v. National Australia Bank_ in 2010 with a 8-0 decision written by Justice [[Antonin Scalia]], and involvement in -- ironically -- the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton. ## Following initial support of Trump, a harsh critic In 2016, Conway enthusiastically backed [[Donald Trump]] and was reportedly under consideration for Solicitor General and later for a top role at the Department of Justice before withdrawing. But his support curdled into opposition. He became one of the president's most vocal critics, regularly dissecting Trump's legal troubles and psychological unfitness in social media threads and op-eds. Conway co-founded the **Lincoln Project**, a coalition of disaffected [Republicans](https://doctorparadox.net/the-gop-is-3-cults-in-a-trenchcoat/) who worked to [defeat Trump in 2020](https://doctorparadox.net/category/politics/2020-election/) and [2024](https://doctorparadox.net/category/politics/2024-election/). He has continued his anti-Trump activism and is now taking the fight to the ballot box: [**Conway is running for Congress in 2026**](https://www.georgeconwayforcongress.com/), seeking to challenge the [authoritarian turn](https://doctorparadox.net/essential-thinkers-on-authoritarian-personalities/) he believes has overtaken the Republican Party.
